Los Angeles Magazine Feature: “Lone” Chelsea Wolfe’s Surreal Journey from Music to Movies

image

Chelsea Wolfe, L.A.’s gothic queen supreme, burst onto the underground music scene with her debut album The Grime and The Glow, in 2010. A year later, she followed that with the critically acclaimed Apokalypsis. Both albums are powerful testaments to Wolfe’s abilities as a songwriter, switching seamlessly between intimate and acoustic folk to grandiose guitar riffs and pounding drums without lapsing into overdetermined eclecticism. Behind all of it Wolfe’s powerful voice jumps out at the listener like a predator in the dark. Since releasing her fourth album, Pain is Beauty, last year, the California native has burst out of the underground and onto playlists everywhere.

Wolfe recently teamed with Mark Pellington, who directed music videos “Jeremy” for Pearl Jam and “Rooster” for Alice In Chains as well as the movie The Mothman Prophecies, to produce an hour-long film, Lone (of which the video for ”Feral Love” is an excerpt). The dialogue in the film is based on the lyrical universe of Pain is Beauty.

We spoke with the singer about making Lone, horse statues, and directing your anger at the sun.

Feral Love Premiere, an excerpt from the long from film LONE directed by Mark Pellington

Chelsea Wolfe has shared the intense, unsettling video for her Pain Is Beauty track “Feral Love”. It’s an excerpt from the film Lone, which was co-written by Wolfe and directed by Mark Pellington, the director of Pearl Jam’s iconic “Jeremy” video and clips for Michael Jackson, Nine Inch Nails, U2, and others, plus the films Arlington Road, The Mothman Prophecies, and more. It’s due out later this year, both as a stream and on custom-designed USB drives. The hour-long film’s dialogue consists solely of lyrics from Pain Is Beauty.

Here’s a quote from Pellington:
“Chelsea Wolfe’s voice and lyrics narrate this voyeuristic look into the abstract, cathartic subconscious. Lone is a sight and sound exploration into the themes of nature, sexuality, memory, mortality, forgiveness, love, innocence, fragility, violence and beauty.”

Lone Pre-order will be going up this week here.

CVLT Nation Interview with Chelsea Wolfe

Photo by Darla Teagarden, wardrobe by Black Swan Theory & Bloodmilk, Austin, TX

From day one, CVLT Nation has been a fan of Chelsea Wolfe and we are super happy to share with you our first interview with her. Chelsea’s new album Pain Is Beauty is out now on Sargent House.

What was the recording process like for Pain is Beauty and how did the experience differentiate itself from prior recordings? Also, the album incorporates a stronger electronic element, bearing a different sound from what fans have come to expect. What powers and influences brought about this change?

CHELSEA WOLFE: I met my bandmate Ben Chisholm about four years ago, right around the time when I desired to bring some sort of electronic element into the band. He’s into analog synths and electronic beats and he’s really brilliant and multi-talented. Needless to say, he was a perfect fit. I found that we wrote songs together easily and we started messing around with some electronic songs that I originally thought we’d use for a side project…but I realized over time that I really didn’t want to put limits on this project, so we eventually started playing some of those songs live and I had a lot of fun with their energy. I knew they’d be the base for this new album.

With each new album cover, you have obscured your features less and less. With Pain is Beauty you are front and center, wreathed in spotlight. How does this visual motif factor in with the album’s sound?

Where the sparse arrangements of her 2012 acoustic album, Unknown Rooms, spotlighted the incremental fluctuations of her voice, Chelsea Wolfe‘s Pain Is Beauty feels like a more wide-angled affair, folding her soprano into swaths of strings and pulsating synths until the result feels as a vast and intimidating as the wild expanses of land and water she’s singing about. Wolfe has called the album her “love-letter to nature,” and while the switch to a more electronic palette would seem to contradict this mission statement, the repetitive, melodically cyclical chorus on “The Waves Have Come” grows with the awe-inspiring momentum of a real-life tornado. Fittingly, there’s a trace of the literary notion of the sublime (or the co-existence of of terror and ecstasy) in the scenario she describes in the song: When earth cracks open and swallows then we’ll never be tired again, and we’ll be given everything the moment we realize we’re not in control. Pain is Beauty Out September 3 via Sargent House.

CRAVE: Album Review of Chelsea Wolfe “Pain Is Beauty”

Pain Is Beauty is an eerily gorgeous album from artist Chelsea Wolfe. Returning with bandmates Ben Chisolm (who co-produced), Kevin Dockter, and Dylan Fujioka, Wolfe takes elements of last year’s Unknown Rooms, mixes in some of 2011’s Apokolypsis, and then integrates all it into a really interesting brew of music.

Wolfe opens her latest with “Feral Love”, which lives up to the title. The entire song is an exercise in creating primitive tensions via repetition and volume manipulation. A constant distorted bass drum anchors the tune, while varied levels of synths and distortion pop in and out. “We Hit A Wall” is Wolfe going huge. Drums endlessly echo, bass chords ring out, and Wolfe sings as though she was recorded in a deep cave at the bottom of the world. “The Warden” comes back to the Apokolypsis style electronica, while “Destruction Makes The World Burn Brighter” is Wolfe’s version of a sixties soul love song put through a filter of the world ending.

BULLETT Magazine’s Behind The Scenes of Chelsea Wolfe’s “Flatlands” Video

imageimage

L.A.-based singer-songwriter Chelsea Wolfe has just premiered a new video for “Flatlands,” a popular track from her critically acclaimed acoustic album Unknown Rooms on (Sargent House). Released as a part of the Converse X Decibel Magazine collaboration and directed by Charlene Bagcal, the video is unapologetically melodramatic, in perfect keeping with Wolfe’s goth-tinged, high-priestess-of-bleakville aesthetic. Above, you’ll find some exclusive behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot, which took place on a farm in Northern California—and don’t forget to watch the video, below! Chelsea Wolfe Performs “Flatlands” on Exclaim! TV

Northern California’s Chelsea Wolfe made her Toronto debut opening for instrumental post-metal trio (and Sargent House label mates) Russian Circles back in August. Exclaim! TV caught up with Wolfe before her set at Sky Blue Sky Sandwiches where she performed solo acoustic, a very different experience from her live show later that night.

Watch Chelsea Wolfe perform “Flatlands,” track one off her new album Unknown Rooms: A Collection of Acoustic Songs.

Chelsea Wolfe will play a few shows in California with Best Coast and then will head out to Japan and a headline tour in Australia. You can find dates here.

The Fader New Track Premiere: Chelsea Wolfe’s “Appalachia”

chelseaThe haunting sway and vocal trill of Chelsea Wolfe’s “Appalachia” has a folksy swagger that feels as much indebted balladeering and old mountain bards as it is to music right now. Her new album, Unknown Rooms: A Collection of Acoustic Songs, is out October 16th on Sargent House and is available for physical preorder or on iTunes (all digital downloads come with two bonus tracks). Wolfe will also do an in-store appearance at Amoeba in LA on Oct 21st, at 5PM. Check here for further tour dates.
